The most you can lose on any stock (assuming you don't use leverage) is 100% of your money. But in contrast you can make much more than 100% if the company does well. For instance the Buima Group Inc. (GTSM:5543) share price is 218% higher than it was three years ago. That sort of return is as solid as granite. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 27% gain in the last three months. But this move may well have been assisted by the reasonably buoyant market (up 13% in 90 days).

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Buima Group became profitable within the last three years. Given the importance of this milestone, it's not overly surprising that the share price has increased strongly.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of Buima Group, it has a TSR of 252% for the last 3 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Buima Group rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 221% over the last year. That includes the value of the dividend. So this year's TSR was actually better than the three-year TSR (annualized) of 52%. These improved returns may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term.
