With EPS Growth And More, Samudera Shipping Line (SGX:S56) Is Interesting
For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.
In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like Samudera Shipping Line (SGX:S56). While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

Samudera Shipping Line's Improving Profits
In a capitalist society capital chases profits, and that means share prices tend rise with earnings per share (EPS). So like the hint of a smile on a face that I love, growing EPS generally makes me look twice. You can imagine, then, that it almost knocked my socks off when I realized that Samudera Shipping Line grew its EPS from US$0.017 to US$0.068, in one short year. When you see earnings grow that quickly, it often means good things ahead for the company.
I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. Samudera Shipping Line shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 2.7% to 13%, and revenue is growing. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.
In the chart below, you can see how the company has grown earnings, and revenue, over time. For finer detail, click on the image.
Samudera Shipping Line isn't a huge company, given its market capitalization of S$264m. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.
Are Samudera Shipping Line Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
I like company leaders to have some skin in the game, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. As a result, I'm encouraged by the fact that insiders own Samudera Shipping Line shares worth a considerable sum. To be specific, they have US$17m worth of shares. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. Those holdings account for over 6.5% of the company; visible skin in the game.
Is Samudera Shipping Line Worth Keeping An Eye On?
Samudera Shipping Line's earnings per share growth have been levitating higher, like a mountain goat scaling the Alps. That EPS growth certainly has my attention, and the large insider ownership only serves to further stoke my interest. At times fast EPS growth is a sign the business has reached an inflection point; and I do like those. So yes, on this short analysis I do think it's worth considering Samudera Shipping Line for a spot on your watchlist. However, before you get too excited we've discovered 3 warning signs for Samudera Shipping Line that you should be aware of.
Of course, you can do well (sometimes) buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But as a growth investor I always like to check out companies that do have those features. You can access a free list of them here.
