If you are building a properly diversified stock portfolio, the chances are some of your picks will perform badly. But the long term shareholders of Vibrant Group Limited (SGX:BIP) have had an unfortunate run in the last three years. So they might be feeling emotional about the 70% share price collapse, in that time. The good news is that the stock is up 4.1% in the last week.

Vibrant Group isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.

Over the last three years, Vibrant Group's revenue dropped 8.2% per year. That is not a good result. With revenue in decline, and profit but a dream, we can understand why the share price has been declining at 19% per year. Having said that, if growth is coming in the future, now may be the low ebb for the company. We don't generally like to own companies that lose money and can't grow revenues. But any company is worth looking at when it makes a maiden profit.

A Different Perspective

Investors in Vibrant Group had a tough year, with a total loss of 11%, against a market gain of about 26%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. However, the loss over the last year isn't as bad as the 11% per annum loss investors have suffered over the last half decade. We would want clear information suggesting the company will grow, before taking the view that the share price will stabilize. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
