Here's Why Enviro-Hub Holdings (SGX:L23) Can Manage Its Debt Responsibly
Howard Marks put it nicely when he said that, rather than worrying about share price volatility, 'The possibility of permanent loss is the risk I worry about... and every practical investor I know worries about.' So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. As with many other companies Enviro-Hub Holdings Ltd. (SGX:L23) makes use of debt. But is this debt a concern to shareholders?
Our free stock report includes 3 warning signs investors should be aware of before investing in Enviro-Hub Holdings. Read for free now.Why Does Debt Bring Risk?
Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. Part and parcel of capitalism is the process of 'creative destruction' where failed businesses are mercilessly liquidated by their bankers. While that is not too common, we often do see indebted companies permanently diluting shareholders because lenders force them to raise capital at a distressed price. Of course, the upside of debt is that it often represents cheap capital, especially when it replaces dilution in a company with the ability to reinvest at high rates of return. When we examine debt levels, we first consider both cash and debt levels, together.
What Is Enviro-Hub Holdings's Net Debt?
As you can see below, Enviro-Hub Holdings had S$38.6m of debt at December 2024, down from S$41.3m a year prior. However, it also had S$13.1m in cash, and so its net debt is S$25.6m.
How Strong Is Enviro-Hub Holdings' Balance Sheet?
The latest balance sheet data shows that Enviro-Hub Holdings had liabilities of S$41.7m due within a year, and liabilities of S$12.1m falling due after that. On the other hand, it had cash of S$13.1m and S$7.97m worth of receivables due within a year. So it has liabilities totalling S$32.8m more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.
This deficit is considerable relative to its market capitalization of S$38.5m, so it does suggest shareholders should keep an eye on Enviro-Hub Holdings' use of debt. Should its lenders demand that it shore up the balance sheet, shareholders would likely face severe dilution.

We use two main ratios to inform us about debt levels relative to earnings. The first is net debt divided by earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA), while the second is how many times its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) covers its interest expense (or its interest cover, for short). Thus we consider debt relative to earnings both with and without depreciation and amortization expenses.
Enviro-Hub Holdings's debt is 2.8 times its EBITDA, and its EBIT cover its interest expense 2.9 times over. This suggests that while the debt levels are significant, we'd stop short of calling them problematic. However, it should be some comfort for shareholders to recall that Enviro-Hub Holdings actually grew its EBIT by a hefty 117%, over the last 12 months. If that earnings trend continues it will make its debt load much more manageable in the future. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But it is Enviro-Hub Holdings's earnings that will influence how the balance sheet holds up in the future. So if you're keen to discover more about its earnings, it might be worth checking out this graph of its long term earnings trend.
Finally, while the tax-man may adore accounting profits, lenders only accept cold hard cash. So we always check how much of that EBIT is translated into free cash flow. Over the most recent three years, Enviro-Hub Holdings recorded free cash flow worth 72% of its EBIT, which is around normal, given free cash flow excludes interest and tax. This free cash flow puts the company in a good position to pay down debt, when appropriate.
Our View
Enviro-Hub Holdings's EBIT growth rate was a real positive on this analysis, as was its conversion of EBIT to free cash flow. Having said that, its interest cover somewhat sensitizes us to potential future risks to the balance sheet. Considering this range of data points, we think Enviro-Hub Holdings is in a good position to manage its debt levels. Having said that, the load is sufficiently heavy that we would recommend any shareholders keep a close eye on it. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it. To that end, you should learn about the 3 warning signs we've spotted with Enviro-Hub Holdings (including 1 which can't be ignored) .
