The Samko Timber Limited (SGX:E6R) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 50%. But the last month did very little to improve the 50% share price decline over the last year.

Although its price has surged higher, it would still be understandable if you think Samko Timber is a stock with good investment prospects with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 0.2x, considering almost half the companies in Singapore's Forestry industry have P/S ratios above 0.9x. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does Samko Timber's Recent Performance Look Like?

As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Samko Timber over the last year, which is not ideal at all. It might be that many expect the disappointing revenue performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/S. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For Samko Timber?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Samko Timber's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 29%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 43% in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

In contrast to the company, the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 11% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term revenue decline into perspective.

In light of this, it's understandable that Samko Timber's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.

What We Can Learn From Samko Timber's P/S?

Samko Timber's stock price has surged recently, but its but its P/S still remains modest. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

It's no surprise that Samko Timber maintains its low P/S off the back of its sliding revenue over the medium-term. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.
