As an investor its worth striving to ensure your overall portfolio beats the market average. But in any portfolio, there are likely to be some stocks that fall short of that benchmark. Unfortunately, that's been the case for longer term Hanwell Holdings Limited (SGX:DM0) shareholders, since the share price is down 37% in the last three years, falling well short of the market decline of around 14%. On the other hand, we note it's up 10.0% in about a month. However, this may be a matter of broader market optimism, since stocks are up 11% in the same time.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During the three years that the share price fell, Hanwell Holdings's earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 16% each year. This change in EPS is reasonably close to the 14% average annual decrease in the share price. So it seems that investor expectations of the company are staying pretty steady, despite the disappointment. Rather, the share price has approximately tracked EPS growth.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. As it happens, Hanwell Holdings's TSR for the last 3 years was -21%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

While it's never nice to take a loss, Hanwell Holdings shareholders can take comfort that , including dividends, their trailing twelve month loss of 11% wasn't as bad as the market loss of around 20%. Given the total loss of 2.9% per year over five years, it seems returns have deteriorated in the last twelve months. While some investors do well specializing in buying companies that are struggling (but nonetheless undervalued), don't forget that Buffett said that 'turnarounds seldom turn'.
