The Pavillon Holdings Ltd. (SGX:596) share price has softened a substantial 60% over the previous 30 days, handing back much of the gains the stock has made lately. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 32% in that time.

In spite of the heavy fall in price, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Pavillon Holdings' P/S ratio of 1.4x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Hospitality industry in Singapore is also close to 1.8x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

What Does Pavillon Holdings' Recent Performance Look Like?

Revenue has risen firmly for Pavillon Holdings recently, which is pleasing to see. One possibility is that the P/S is moderate because investors think this respectable revenue growth might not be enough to outperform the broader industry in the near future. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders probably aren't too pessimistic about the future direction of the share price.

How Is Pavillon Holdings' Revenue Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like Pavillon Holdings' is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 10% last year. This was backed up an excellent period prior to see revenue up by 112% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 20% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

With this information, we find it interesting that Pavillon Holdings is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.

The Bottom Line On Pavillon Holdings' P/S

Following Pavillon Holdings' share price tumble, its P/S is just clinging on to the industry median P/S. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We've established that Pavillon Holdings currently trades on a lower than expected P/S since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider industry forecast. When we see strong revenue with faster-than-industry growth, we can only assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/S ratio. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued if recent medium-term revenue trends continue, but investors seem to think future revenue could see some volatility.

You need to take note of risks, for example - Pavillon Holdings has 2 warning signs (and 1 which is a bit unpleasant) we think you should know about.
