Further weakness as Sarine Technologies (SGX:U77) drops 11% this week, taking three-year losses to 34%
Many investors define successful investing as beating the market average over the long term. But its virtually certain that sometimes you will buy stocks that fall short of the market average returns. We regret to report that long term Sarine Technologies Ltd. (SGX:U77) shareholders have had that experience, with the share price dropping 39% in three years, versus a market return of about 53%. More recently, the share price has dropped a further 17% in a month.
After losing 11% this past week, it's worth investigating the company's fundamentals to see what we can infer from past performance.
Sarine Technologies isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally hope to see good revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.
Over the last three years, Sarine Technologies' revenue dropped 19% per year. That's definitely a weaker result than most pre-profit companies report. With revenue in decline, the share price decline of 12% per year is hardly undeserved. The key question now is whether the company has the capacity to fund itself to profitability, without more cash. Of course, it is possible for businesses to bounce back from a revenue drop - but we'd want to see that before getting interested.

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between Sarine Technologies' total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. The TSR attempts to capture the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested) as well as any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings offered to shareholders. Sarine Technologies' TSR of was a loss of 34% for the 3 years. That wasn't as bad as its share price return, because it has paid dividends.
A Different Perspective
Sarine Technologies shareholders gained a total return of 6.7% during the year. But that was short of the market average. But at least that's still a gain! Over five years the TSR has been a reduction of 4% per year, over five years. So this might be a sign the business has turned its fortunes around. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Case in point: We've spotted 3 warning signs for Sarine Technologies you should be aware of, and 1 of them is significant.
