Grand Venture Technology (SGX:JLB) Might Be Having Difficulty Using Its Capital Effectively
To find a multi-bagger stock, what are the underlying trends we should look for in a business? Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. In light of that, when we looked at Grand Venture Technology (SGX:JLB) and its ROCE trend, we weren't exactly thrilled.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Grand Venture Technology:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.092 = S$15m ÷ (S$204m - S$45m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2022).
Thus, Grand Venture Technology has an ROCE of 9.2%. On its own that's a low return, but compared to the average of 5.8% generated by the Machinery industry, it's much better.

How Are Returns Trending?
In terms of Grand Venture Technology's historical ROCE movements, the trend isn't fantastic. Over the last five years, returns on capital have decreased to 9.2% from 16% five years ago. However, given capital employed and revenue have both increased it appears that the business is currently pursuing growth, at the consequence of short term returns. If these investments prove successful, this can bode very well for long term stock performance.
On a related note, Grand Venture Technology has decreased its current liabilities to 22% of total assets. So we could link some of this to the decrease in ROCE. Effectively this means their suppliers or short-term creditors are funding less of the business, which reduces some elements of risk. Some would claim this reduces the business' efficiency at generating ROCE since it is now funding more of the operations with its own money.
Our Take On Grand Venture Technology's ROCE
While returns have fallen for Grand Venture Technology in recent times, we're encouraged to see that sales are growing and that the business is reinvesting in its operations. And the stock has done incredibly well with a 157% return over the last three years, so long term investors are no doubt ecstatic with that result. So should these growth trends continue, we'd be optimistic on the stock going forward.
