It's Down 25% But Image Systems AB (STO:IS) Could Be Riskier Than It Looks

Image Systems AB (STO:IS) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 25% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. Looking at the bigger picture, even after this poor month the stock is up 50% in the last year.

After such a large drop in price, Image Systems' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.9x might make it look like a buy right now compared to the Electronic industry in Sweden, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 1.4x and even P/S above 6x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does Image Systems' Recent Performance Look Like?

The revenue growth achieved at Image Systems over the last year would be more than acceptable for most companies. One possibility is that the P/S is low because investors think this respectable revenue growth might actually underperform the broader industry in the near future. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

How Is Image Systems' Revenue Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Image Systems' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 17% gain to the company's top line. The latest three year period has also seen a 26% overall rise in revenue, aided extensively by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably been satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 8.5% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is pretty similar based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Image Systems' P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are more bearish than recent times would indicate and have been accepting lower selling prices.

What Does Image Systems' P/S Mean For Investors?

Image Systems' P/S has taken a dip along with its share price. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

The fact that Image Systems currently trades at a low P/S relative to the industry is unexpected considering its recent three-year growth is in line with the wider industry forecast. There could be some unobserved threats to revenue preventing the P/S ratio from matching the company's performance. While recent
