Investors Who Bought Hoylu (STO:HOYLU) Shares A Year Ago Are Now Up 80%
Passive investing in index funds can generate returns that roughly match the overall market. But one can do better than that by picking better than average stocks (as part of a diversified portfolio). For example, the Hoylu AB (publ) (STO:HOYLU) share price is up 80% in the last year, clearly besting the market return of around 14% (not including dividends). That's a solid performance by our standards! On the other hand, longer term shareholders have had a tougher run, with the stock falling 13% in three years.

Given that Hoylu didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.
In the last year Hoylu saw its revenue shrink by 5.8%. Despite the lack of revenue growth, the stock has returned a solid 80% the last twelve months. To us that means that there isn't a lot of correlation between the past revenue performance and the share price, but a closer look at analyst forecasts and the bottom line may well explain a lot.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between Hoylu's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. The TSR attempts to capture the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested) as well as any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings offered to shareholders. Hoylu hasn't been paying dividends, but its TSR of 86% exceeds its share price return of 80%, implying it has either spun-off a business, or raised capital at a discount; thereby providing additional value to shareholders.
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that Hoylu shareholders have gained 86% (in total) over the last year. What is absolutely clear is that is far preferable to the dismal 2.8% average annual loss suffered over the last three years. The optimist would say this is evidence that the stock has bottomed, and better days lie ahead. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 6 warning signs for Hoylu (of which 3 shouldn't be ignored!) you should know about.
