The Midsummer AB (publ) (STO:MIDS) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 137%. The annual gain comes to 118% following the latest surge, making investors sit up and take notice.

After such a large jump in price, when almost half of the companies in Sweden's Semiconductor industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 2.1x, you may consider Midsummer as a stock not worth researching with its 9.4x P/S ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/S.

How Midsummer Has Been Performing

Midsummer certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue more than most other companies. It seems the market expects this form will continue into the future, hence the elevated P/S ratio. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Keen to find out how analysts think Midsummer's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Is There Enough Revenue Growth Forecasted For Midsummer?

Midsummer's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 112%. Despite this strong recent growth, it's still struggling to catch up as its three-year revenue frustratingly shrank by 27% overall. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the sole analyst covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 133% over the next year. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 4.9%, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this in mind, it's not hard to understand why Midsummer's P/S is high relative to its industry peers. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

What Does Midsummer's P/S Mean For Investors?

Midsummer's P/S has grown nicely over the last month thanks to a handy boost in the share price. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We've established that Midsummer maintains its high P/S on the strength of its forecasted revenue growth being higher than the the rest of the Semiconductor industry, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident future revenues aren't under threat. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
