Does Swedish Logistic Property (STO:SLP B) Have A Healthy Balance Sheet?

When we think about how risky a company is, we always like to look at its use of debt, since debt overload can lead to ruin. What Risk Does Debt Bring?

Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. A Look At Swedish Logistic Property's Liabilities

The latest balance sheet data shows that Swedish Logistic Property had liabilities of kr1.38b due within a year, and liabilities of kr8.04b falling due after that. Offsetting these obligations, it had cash of kr159.0m as well as receivables valued at kr81.0m due within 12 months. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by kr9.18b.

This is a mountain of leverage relative to its market capitalization of kr10.8b. Should its lenders demand that it shore up the balance sheet, shareholders would likely face severe dilution.

Neither Swedish Logistic Property's ability handle its debt, based on its EBITDA, nor its interest cover gave us confidence in its ability to take on more debt. But its EBIT growth rate tells a very different story, and suggests some resilience. Looking at all the angles mentioned above, it does seem to us that Swedish Logistic Property is a somewhat risky investment as a result of its debt. Not all risk is bad, as it can boost share price returns if it pays off, but this debt risk is worth keeping in mind. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start.
