Orexo AB (publ) (STO:ORX) Might Not Be As Mispriced As It Looks After Plunging 28%
Orexo AB (publ) (STO:ORX) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 28% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 13% in that time.
After such a large drop in price, Orexo may be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.9x, since almost half of all companies in the Pharmaceuticals industry in Sweden have P/S ratios greater than 15.4x and even P/S higher than 147x are not unusual. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Orexo's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Orexo's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. It seems that many are expecting the poor revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the P/S ratio. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.

Orexo's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 2.9%. That put a dampener on the good run it was having over the longer-term as its three-year revenue growth is still a noteworthy 5.3% in total. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been mostly respectable for the company.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 12% per annum as estimated by the lone analyst watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 10% per year, which is not materially different.
With this information, we find it odd that Orexo is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.
The Final Word
Shares in Orexo have plummeted and its P/S has followed suit. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
We've seen that Orexo currently trades on a lower than expected P/S since its forecast growth is in line with the wider industry. The low P/S could be an indication that the revenue growth estimates are being questioned by the market. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued, but investors seem to think future revenue could see some volatility.
