Biotage AB (publ)'s (STO:BIOT) Popularity With Investors Under Threat As Stock Sinks 26%
To the annoyance of some shareholders, Biotage AB (publ) (STO:BIOT) shares are down a considerable 26% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 38% in that time.
Even after such a large drop in price, Biotage may still be sending bearish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 29.7x, since almost half of all companies in Sweden have P/E ratios under 22x and even P/E's lower than 14x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.
With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Biotage has been doing relatively well. It seems that many are expecting the strong earnings performance to persist, which has raised the P/E. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

How Is Biotage's Growth Trending?
Biotage's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow earnings per share by a handy 6.5% last year. EPS has also lifted 13% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been respectable for the company.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 19% each year as estimated by the two analysts watching the company. With the market predicted to deliver 21% growth each year, the company is positioned for a comparable earnings result.
With this information, we find it interesting that Biotage is trading at a high P/E compared to the market. Apparently many investors in the company are more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. These shareholders may be setting themselves up for disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.
The Bottom Line On Biotage's P/E
Biotage's P/E hasn't come down all the way after its stock plunged. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
We've established that Biotage currently trades on a higher than expected P/E since its forecast growth is only in line with the wider market. Right now we are uncomfortable with the relatively high share price as the predicted future earnings aren't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. This places shareholders' investments at risk and potential investors in danger of paying an unnecessary premium.
