Bambuser AB (publ)'s (STO:BUSER) Shares Climb 30% But Its Business Is Yet to Catch Up
Those holding Bambuser AB (publ) (STO:BUSER) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 30% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Still, the 30-day jump doesn't change the fact that longer term shareholders have seen their stock decimated by the 65% share price drop in the last twelve months.
Although its price has surged higher, there still wouldn't be many who think Bambuser's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.3x is worth a mention when it essentially matches the median P/S in Sweden's Interactive Media and Services industry. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

What Does Bambuser's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
Bambuser hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. Perhaps the market is expecting its poor revenue performance to improve, keeping the P/S from dropping. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Bambuser would need to produce growth that's similar to the industry.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 18%. In spite of this, the company still managed to deliver immense revenue growth over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders will be pleased, but also have some serious questions to ponder about the last 12 months.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to slump, contracting by 0.6% during the coming year according to the sole analyst following the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 21% growth, that's a disappointing outcome.
With this in consideration, we think it doesn't make sense that Bambuser's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. It seems most investors are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects, but the analyst cohort is not so confident this will happen. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as these declining revenues are likely to weigh on the share price eventually.
What We Can Learn From Bambuser's P/S?
Bambuser's stock has a lot of momentum behind it lately, which has brought its P/S level with the rest of the industry. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
While Bambuser's P/S isn't anything out of the ordinary for companies in the industry, we didn't expect it given forecasts of revenue decline. When we see a gloomy outlook like this, our immediate thoughts are that the share price is at risk of declining, negatively impacting P/S. If the declining revenues were to materialize in the form of a declining share price, shareholders will be feeling the pinch.
