ProfilGruppen (STO:PROF B) Has Gifted Shareholders With A Fantastic 142% Total Return On Their Investment
It might be of some concern to shareholders to see the ProfilGruppen AB (publ) (STO:PROF B) share price down 12% in the last month. But that scarcely detracts from the really solid long term returns generated by the company over five years. We think most investors would be happy with the 120% return, over that period. Generally speaking the long term returns will give you a better idea of business quality than short periods can. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean it's cheap now.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During five years of share price growth, ProfilGruppen achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 5.6% per year. This EPS growth is lower than the 17% average annual increase in the share price. This suggests that market participants hold the company in higher regard, these days. That's not necessarily surprising considering the five-year track record of earnings growth.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
Investors should note that there's a difference between ProfilGruppen's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. ProfilGruppen's TSR of 142% for the 5 years exceeded its share price return, because it has paid dividends.
A Different Perspective
Investors in ProfilGruppen had a tough year, with a total loss of 1.4%, against a market gain of about 31%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 19% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with ProfilGruppen , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
