Share Price Aside, Sotkamo Silver (NGM:SOSI) Has Delivered Shareholders A 24% Return.
While not a mind-blowing move, it is good to see that the Sotkamo Silver AB (NGM:SOSI) share price has gained 13% in the last three months. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last five years have been less than pleasing. In fact, the share price is down 38%, which falls well short of the return you could get by buying an index fund.

Because Sotkamo Silver made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between Sotkamo Silver's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. The TSR attempts to capture the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested) as well as any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings offered to shareholders. We note that Sotkamo Silver's TSR, at 24% is higher than its share price return of -38%. When you consider it hasn't been paying a dividend, this data suggests shareholders have benefitted from a spin-off, or had the opportunity to acquire attractively priced shares in a discounted capital raising.
A Different Perspective
Sotkamo Silver shareholders are down 13% for the year, but the market itself is up 18%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 4% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
