Attendo's (STO:ATT) Performance Is Even Better Than Its Earnings Suggest
Attendo AB (publ) (STO:ATT) just reported healthy earnings but the stock price didn't move much. We think that investors have missed some encouraging factors underlying the profit figures.

Examining Cashflow Against Attendo's Earnings
Many investors haven't heard of the accrual ratio from cashflow, but it is actually a useful measure of how well a company's profit is backed up by free cash flow (FCF) during a given period. To get the accrual ratio we first subtract FCF from profit for a period, and then divide that number by the average operating assets for the period. This ratio tells us how much of a company's profit is not backed by free cashflow.
As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. That is not intended to imply we should worry about a positive accrual ratio, but it's worth noting where the accrual ratio is rather high. To quote a 2014 paper by Lewellen and Resutek, "firms with higher accruals tend to be less profitable in the future".
Over the twelve months to September 2024, Attendo recorded an accrual ratio of -0.25. That implies it has very good cash conversion, and that its earnings in the last year actually significantly understate its free cash flow. Indeed, in the last twelve months it reported free cash flow of kr2.2b, well over the kr400.0m it reported in profit. Attendo's free cash flow improved over the last year, which is generally good to see.
That might leave you wondering what analysts are forecasting in terms of future profitability. Luckily, you can click here to see an interactive graph depicting future profitability, based on their estimates.
Our Take On Attendo's Profit Performance
As we discussed above, Attendo's accrual ratio indicates strong conversion of profit to free cash flow, which is a positive for the company. Because of this, we think Attendo's underlying earnings potential is as good as, or possibly even better, than the statutory profit makes it seem! And the EPS is up 48% over the last twelve months. At the end of the day, it's essential to consider more than just the factors above, if you want to understand the company properly. With this in mind, we wouldn't consider investing in a stock unless we had a thorough understanding of the risks. This note has only looked at a single factor that sheds light on the nature of Attendo's profit. But there are plenty of other ways to inform your opinion of a company.
