The Market Doesn't Like What It Sees From Spotlight Group AB (publ)'s (NGM:SPGR) Revenues Yet As Shares Tumble 26%
To the annoyance of some shareholders, Spotlight Group AB (publ) (NGM:SPGR) shares are down a considerable 26% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 39% share price drop.
Since its price has dipped substantially, Spotlight Group may be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.8x, since almost half of all companies in the Capital Markets industry in Sweden have P/S ratios greater than 2.4x and even P/S higher than 11x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does Spotlight Group's Recent Performance Look Like?
As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Spotlight Group over the last year, which is not ideal at all. One possibility is that the P/S is low because investors think the company won't do enough to avoid underperforming the broader industry in the near future. Those who are bullish on Spotlight Group will be hoping that this isn't the case so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Spotlight Group's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 18% decrease to the company's top line. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 22% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 16% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.
With this information, we are not surprised that Spotlight Group is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. However, we think shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent revenue trends are already weighing down the shares.
The Bottom Line On Spotlight Group's P/S
Spotlight Group's recently weak share price has pulled its P/S back below other Capital Markets companies. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
It's no surprise that Spotlight Group maintains its low P/S off the back of its sliding revenue over the medium-term. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.
