Systemair's (STO:SYSR) three-year earnings growth trails the 42% YoY shareholder returns
It hasn't been the best quarter for Systemair AB (publ) (STO:SYSR) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 24% in that time. But in three years the returns have been great. In fact, the share price is up a full 180% compared to three years ago. After a run like that some may not be surprised to see prices moderate. The thing to consider is whether the underlying business is doing well enough to support the current price.
Since it's been a strong week for Systemair shareholders, let's have a look at trend of the longer term fundamentals.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
During three years of share price growth, Systemair achieved compound earnings per share growth of 27% per year. In comparison, the 41% per year gain in the share price outpaces the EPS growth. This suggests that, as the business progressed over the last few years, it gained the confidence of market participants. That's not necessarily surprising considering the three-year track record of earnings growth.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. As it happens, Systemair's TSR for the last 3 years was 187%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that Systemair shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 15% over the last year. And that does include the dividend. However, the TSR over five years, coming in at 15% per year, is even more impressive. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Systemair better, we need to consider many other factors. Take risks, for example - Systemair has 2 warning signs we think you should be aware of.
