Instalco AB (publ)'s (STO:INSTAL) investors are due to receive a payment of SEK0.68 per share on 13th of May. Including this payment, the dividend yield on the stock will be 2.5%, which is a modest boost for shareholders' returns.
Instalco's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings
If it is predictable over a long period, even low dividend yields can be attractive. The last dividend was quite easily covered by Instalco's earnings. This means that a large portion of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 162.4%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 28% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Instalco Is Still Building Its Track Record
Even though the company has been paying a consistent dividend for a while, we would like to see a few more years before we feel comfortable relying on it. The annual payment during the last 7 years was SEK0.22 in 2018, and the most recent fiscal year payment was SEK0.68. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 17% a year over that time. We're not overly excited about the relatively short history of dividend payments, however the dividend is growing at a nice rate and we might take a closer look.
Dividend Growth Is Doubtful
Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. Let's not jump to conclusions as things might not be as good as they appear on the surface. Over the past five years, it looks as though Instalco's EPS has declined at around 7.7% a year. If the company is making less over time, it naturally follows that it will also have to pay out less in dividends. However, the next year is actually looking up, with earnings set to rise. We would just wait until it becomes a pattern before getting too excited.
In Summary
Overall, it's nice to see a consistent dividend payment, but we think that longer term, the current level of payment might be unsustainable. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. We don't think Instalco is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
