Atlas Copco's (STO:ATCO A) Upcoming Dividend Will Be Larger Than Last Year's

Atlas Copco AB (publ)'s (STO:ATCO A) dividend will be increasing from last year's payment of the same period to SEK1.50 on 7th of May. This takes the annual payment to 1.6% of the current stock price, which unfortunately is below what the industry is paying.

Atlas Copco's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings

The dividend yield is a little bit low, but sustainability of the payments is also an important part of evaluating an income stock. Based on the last payment, Atlas Copco was quite comfortably earning enough to cover the dividend. This indicates that quite a large proportion of earnings is being invested back into the business.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 22.7%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 41% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Atlas Copco Has A Solid Track Record

The company has a sustained record of paying dividends with very little fluctuation. The annual payment during the last 10 years was SEK1.38 in 2015, and the most recent fiscal year payment was SEK3.00. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 8.1% over that duration. Dividends have grown at a reasonable rate over this period, and without any major cuts in the payment over time, we think this is an attractive combination as it provides a nice boost to shareholder returns.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. We are encouraged to see that Atlas Copco has grown earnings per share at 12% per year over the past five years. Since earnings per share is growing at an acceptable rate, and the payout policy is balanced, we think the company is positioning itself well to grow earnings and dividends in the future.

We Really Like Atlas Copco's Dividend

Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that Atlas Copco is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. Distributions are quite easily covered by earnings, which are also being converted to cash flows. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company. Companies that are growing earnings tend to be the best dividend stocks over the long term.
