While shareholders of Saudi Real Estate (TADAWUL:4020) are in the black over 5 years, those who bought a week ago aren't so fortunate
It hasn't been the best quarter for Saudi Real Estate Company (TADAWUL:4020) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 23% in that time. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last five years have been pleasing. Its return of 54% has certainly bested the market return!
While this past week has detracted from the company's five-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.
While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During the last half decade, Saudi Real Estate became profitable. That would generally be considered a positive, so we'd hope to see the share price to rise. Since the company was unprofitable five years ago, but not three years ago, it's worth taking a look at the returns in the last three years, too. We can see that the Saudi Real Estate share price is up 21% in the last three years. In the same period, EPS is up 95% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 7% average annual increase in the share price over the same three years. Therefore, it seems the market has moderated its expectations for growth, somewhat.
The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).
It is of course excellent to see how Saudi Real Estate has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. This free interactive report on Saudi Real Estate's balance sheet strength is a great place to start, if you want to investigate the stock further.
What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
We've already covered Saudi Real Estate's share price action, but we should also mention its total shareholder return (TSR). Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Saudi Real Estate's TSR of 77% for the 5 years exceeded its share price return, because it has paid dividends.
A Different Perspective
While it's certainly disappointing to see that Saudi Real Estate shares lost 1.5% throughout the year, that wasn't as bad as the market loss of 4.4%. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 12%, each year, over five years. It could be that the business is just facing some short term problems, but shareholders should keep a close eye on the fundamentals.
