European Eltech (MCX:EELT) Share Prices Have Dropped 48% In The Last Three Years
In order to justify the effort of selecting individual stocks, it's worth striving to beat the returns from a market index fund. But its virtually certain that sometimes you will buy stocks that fall short of the market average returns. Unfortunately, that's been the case for longer term European Eltech Public Joint Stock Company (MCX:EELT) shareholders, since the share price is down 48% in the last three years, falling well short of the market return of around 49%.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During the unfortunate three years of share price decline, European Eltech actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) improve by 25% per year. This is quite a puzzle, and suggests there might be something temporarily buoying the share price. Alternatively, growth expectations may have been unreasonable in the past.
Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.
Revenue is actually up 5.8% over the three years, so the share price drop doesn't seem to hinge on revenue, either. This analysis is just perfunctory, but it might be worth researching European Eltech more closely, as sometimes stocks fall unfairly. This could present an opportunity.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between European Eltech's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. European Eltech hasn't been paying dividends, but its TSR of -45% exceeds its share price return of -48%, implying it has either spun-off a business, or raised capital at a discount; thereby providing additional value to shareholders.
A Different Perspective
Over the last year, European Eltech shareholders took a loss of 19%. In contrast the market gained about 4.2%. Of course the long term matters more than the short term, and even great stocks will sometimes have a poor year. The three-year loss of 13% per year isn't as bad as the last twelve months, suggesting that the company has not been able to convince the market it has solved its problems. We would be wary of buying into a company with unsolved problems, although some investors will buy into struggling stocks if they believe the price is sufficiently attractive. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
