To find a multi-bagger stock, what are the underlying trends we should look for in a business? Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. So on that note, Romcab (BVB:MCAB) looks quite promising in regards to its trends of return on capital.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Romcab:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.051 = RON27m ÷ (RON851m - RON328m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2023).
Therefore, Romcab has an ROCE of 5.1%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Electrical industry average of 13%.

What Can We Tell From Romcab's ROCE Trend?
Romcab has recently broken into profitability so their prior investments seem to be paying off. About five years ago the company was generating losses but things have turned around because it's now earning 5.1% on its capital. Not only that, but the company is utilizing 60% more capital than before, but that's to be expected from a company trying to break into profitability. This can tell us that the company has plenty of reinvestment opportunities that are able to generate higher returns.
On a side note, we noticed that the improvement in ROCE appears to be partly fueled by an increase in current liabilities. Essentially the business now has suppliers or short-term creditors funding about 39% of its operations, which isn't ideal. Keep an eye out for future increases because when the ratio of current liabilities to total assets gets particularly high, this can introduce some new risks for the business.
The Key Takeaway
To the delight of most shareholders, Romcab has now broken into profitability. Since the stock has only returned 3.6% to shareholders over the last three years, the promising fundamentals may not be recognized yet by investors. Given that, we'd look further into this stock in case it has more traits that could make it multiply in the long term.
Romcab does come with some risks though, we found 5 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 4 of those are a bit unpleasant...
