With A 28% Price Drop For Altur S.A. (BVB:ALT) You'll Still Get What You Pay For
Altur S.A. (BVB:ALT) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 28% share price drop in the last month. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 50% in that time.
Even after such a large drop in price, there still wouldn't be many who think Altur's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x is worth a mention when the median P/S in Romania's Auto Components industry is similar at about 0.3x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

What Does Altur's Recent Performance Look Like?
As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Altur over the last year, which is not ideal at all. Perhaps investors believe the recent revenue performance is enough to keep in line with the industry, which is keeping the P/S from dropping off. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like Altur's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 22% decrease to the company's top line. Regardless, revenue has managed to lift by a handy 11% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been mostly respectable for the company.
It's interesting to note that the rest of the industry is similarly expected to grow by 4.1% over the next year, which is fairly even with the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
With this information, we can see why Altur is trading at a fairly similar P/S to the industry. Apparently shareholders are comfortable to simply hold on assuming the company will continue keeping a low profile.
The Final Word
Following Altur's share price tumble, its P/S is just clinging on to the industry median P/S. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
It appears to us that Altur maintains its moderate P/S off the back of its recent three-year growth being in line with the wider industry forecast. With previous revenue trends that keep up with the current industry outlook, it's hard to justify the company's P/S ratio deviating much from it's current point. Given the current circumstances, it seems improbable that the share price will experience any significant movement in either direction in the near future if recent medium-term revenue trends persist.
