The Returns At Altri SGPS (ELI:ALTR) Provide Us With Signs Of What's To Come
If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. However, after briefly looking over the numbers, we don't think Altri SGPS (ELI:ALTR) has the makings of a multi-bagger going forward, but let's have a look at why that may be.
What is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. The formula for this calculation on Altri SGPS is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.032 = €36m ÷ (€1.5b - €309m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2020).
So, Altri SGPS has an ROCE of 3.2%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Forestry industry average of 6.5%.

In the above chart we have measured Altri SGPS' prior ROCE against its prior performance, but the future is arguably more important. If you're interested, you can view the analysts predictions in our free report on analyst forecasts for the company.
What Can We Tell From Altri SGPS' ROCE Trend?
In terms of Altri SGPS' historical ROCE movements, the trend isn't fantastic. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 14% over the last five years. And considering revenue has dropped while employing more capital, we'd be cautious. If this were to continue, you might be looking at a company that is trying to reinvest for growth but is actually losing market share since sales haven't increased.
The Key Takeaway
From the above analysis, we find it rather worrisome that returns on capital and sales for Altri SGPS have fallen, meanwhile the business is employing more capital than it was five years ago. The market must be rosy on the stock's future because even though the underlying trends aren't too encouraging, the stock has soared 138%. In any case, the current underlying trends don't bode well for long term performance so unless they reverse, we'd start looking elsewhere.
