Returns On Capital At R22 (WSE:R22) Have Stalled

If we want to find a potential multi-bagger, often there are underlying trends that can provide clues. One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. With that in mind, the ROCE of R22 (WSE:R22) looks decent, right now, so lets see what the trend of returns can tell us.

Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)

If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on R22 is:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.12 = zł83m ÷ (zł868m - zł155m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2023).

So, R22 has an ROCE of 12%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the Telecom industry average of 8.8% it's much better.

So How Is R22's ROCE Trending?

While the current returns on capital are decent, they haven't changed much. The company has employed 374% more capital in the last five years, and the returns on that capital have remained stable at 12%. 12% is a pretty standard return, and it provides some comfort knowing that R22 has consistently earned this amount. Stable returns in this ballpark can be unexciting, but if they can be maintained over the long run, they often provide nice rewards to shareholders.

The Key Takeaway

To sum it up, R22 has simply been reinvesting capital steadily, at those decent rates of return. And the stock has done incredibly well with a 290% return over the last five years, so long term investors are no doubt ecstatic with that result. So while the positive underlying trends may be accounted for by investors, we still think this stock is worth looking into further.
