INFRA S.A.'s (WSE:IFA) Stock Has Shown Weakness Lately But Financial Prospects Look Decent: Is The Market Wrong?

INFRA (WSE:IFA) has had a rough three months with its share price down 32%. However, stock prices are usually driven by a company’s financials over the long term, which in this case look pretty respectable. Specifically, we decided to study INFRA's ROE in this article.

Return on Equity or ROE is a test of how effectively a company is growing its value and managing investors’ money. In simpler terms, it measures the profitability of a company in relation to shareholder's equity.

How To Calculate Return On Equity?

The formula for ROE is:

Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity

So, based on the above formula, the ROE for INFRA is:

2.2% = zł25k ÷ zł1.2m (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2025).

The 'return' is the profit over the last twelve months. Another way to think of that is that for every PLN1 worth of equity, the company was able to earn PLN0.02 in profit.

What Is The Relationship Between ROE And Earnings Growth?

So far, we've learned that ROE is a measure of a company's profitability. Depending on how much of these profits the company reinvests or "retains", and how effectively it does so, we are then able to assess a company’s earnings growth potential. Assuming everything else remains unchanged, the higher the ROE and profit retention, the higher the growth rate of a company compared to companies that don't necessarily bear these characteristics.

INFRA's Earnings Growth And 2.2% ROE

It is hard to argue that INFRA's ROE is much good in and of itself. Even when compared to the industry average of 19%, the ROE figure is pretty disappointing. INFRA was still able to see a decent net income growth of 14% over the past five years. We reckon that there could be other factors at play here. For example, it is possible that the company's management has made some good strategic decisions, or that the company has a low payout ratio.

We then performed a comparison between INFRA's net income growth with the industry, which revealed that the company's growth is similar to the average industry growth of 14% in the same 5-year period.

Earnings growth is a huge factor in stock valuation. What investors need to determine next is if the expected earnings growth, or the lack of it, is already built into the share price. Doing so will help them establish if the stock's future looks promising or ominous. If you're wondering about INFRA's's valuation, check out this gauge of its price-to-earnings ratio, as compared to its industry.

Is INFRA Efficiently Re-investing Its Profits?

INFRA doesn't pay any regular dividends, meaning that all of its profits are being reinvested in the business, which explains the fair bit of earnings growth the company has seen.

Conclusion

On the whole, we do feel that INFRA has some positive attributes. Despite its low rate of return, the fact that the company reinvests a very high portion of its profits into its business, no doubt contributed to its high earnings growth. While we won't completely dismiss the company, what we would do, is try to ascertain how risky the business is to make a more informed decision around the company.
