The truth is that if you invest for long enough, you're going to end up with some losing stocks. But long term ML System S.A. (WSE:MLS) shareholders have had a particularly rough ride in the last three year. Unfortunately, they have held through a 64% decline in the share price in that time. And over the last year the share price fell 44%, so we doubt many shareholders are delighted. Even worse, it's down 25% in about a month, which isn't fun at all. Importantly, this could be a market reaction to the recently released financial results. You can check out the latest numbers in our company report.

Given the past week has been tough on shareholders, let's investigate the fundamentals and see what we can learn.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

ML System became profitable within the last five years. That would generally be considered a positive, so we are surprised to see the share price is down. So given the share price is down it's worth checking some other metrics too.

We note that, in three years, revenue has actually grown at a 5.6% annual rate, so that doesn't seem to be a reason to sell shares. It's probably worth investigating ML System further; while we may be missing something on this analysis, there might also be an opportunity.

A Different Perspective

Investors in ML System had a tough year, with a total loss of 44%, against a market gain of about 22%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 8% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
