For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.
So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like 11 bit studios (WSE:11B). Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Fast Is 11 bit studios Growing Its Earnings Per Share?
Over the last three years, 11 bit studios has grown earnings per share (EPS) like young bamboo after rain; fast, and from a low base. So I don't think the percent growth rate is particularly meaningful. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. Like a firecracker arcing through the night sky, 11 bit studios's EPS shot from zł7.69 to zł19.67, over the last year. You don't see 156% year-on-year growth like that, very often. That could be a sign that the business has reached a true inflection point.
I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). The good news is that 11 bit studios is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 20.2 percentage points to 53%, over the last year. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

Are 11 bit studios Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
I like company leaders to have some skin in the game, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. So it is good to see that 11 bit studios insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. Given insiders own a small fortune of shares, currently valued at zł199m, they have plenty of motivation to push the business to succeed. At 16% of the company, the co-investment by insiders gives me confidence that management will make long-term focussed decisions.
It's good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? A brief analysis of the CEO compensation suggests they are. For companies with market capitalizations between zł775m and zł3.1b, like 11 bit studios, the median CEO pay is around zł1.4m.
The 11 bit studios CEO received zł770k in compensation for the year ending . That seems pretty reasonable, especially given its below the median for similar sized companies. CEO compensation is hardly the most important aspect of a company to consider, but when its reasonable that does give me a little more confidence that leadership are looking out for shareholder interests. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.
Is 11 bit studios Worth Keeping An Eye On?
11 bit studios's earnings have taken off like any random crypto-currency did, back in 2017. The sweetener is that insiders have a mountain of stock, and the CEO remuneration is quite reasonable. The sharp increase in earnings could signal good business momentum. 11 bit studios certainly ticks a few of my boxes, so I think it's probably well worth further consideration. Before you take the next step you should know about the 2 warning signs for 11 bit studios (1 is concerning!) that we have uncovered.
