Returns On Capital Are Showing Encouraging Signs At Grupa Azoty (WSE:ATT)
If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. So on that note, Grupa Azoty (WSE:ATT) looks quite promising in regards to its trends of return on capital.
What is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for Grupa Azoty, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.13 = zł2.1b ÷ (zł25b - zł8.7b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2022).
Thus, Grupa Azoty has an ROCE of 13%. That's a relatively normal return on capital, and it's around the 11% generated by the Chemicals industry.

How Are Returns Trending?
Investors would be pleased with what's happening at Grupa Azoty. The data shows that returns on capital have increased substantially over the last five years to 13%. The company is effectively making more money per dollar of capital used, and it's worth noting that the amount of capital has increased too, by 69%. This can indicate that there's plenty of opportunities to invest capital internally and at ever higher rates, a combination that's common among multi-baggers.
For the record though, there was a noticeable increase in the company's current liabilities over the period, so we would attribute some of the ROCE growth to that. Effectively this means that suppliers or short-term creditors are now funding 35% of the business, which is more than it was five years ago. Keep an eye out for future increases because when the ratio of current liabilities to total assets gets particularly high, this can introduce some new risks for the business.
The Bottom Line
All in all, it's terrific to see that Grupa Azoty is reaping the rewards from prior investments and is growing its capital base. And since the stock has fallen 25% over the last five years, there might be an opportunity here. With that in mind, we believe the promising trends warrant this stock for further investigation.
