The Market Doesn't Like What It Sees From ONICO S.A.'s (WSE:ONC) Revenues Yet As Shares Tumble 26%
ONICO S.A. (WSE:ONC) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 26% share price drop in the last month. Still, a bad month hasn't completely ruined the past year with the stock gaining 56%, which is great even in a bull market.
After such a large drop in price, ONICO may be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x, since almost half of all companies in the Oil and Gas industry in Poland have P/S ratios greater than 1.3x and even P/S higher than 4x are not unusual. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has ONICO Performed Recently?
For instance, ONICO's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. One possibility is that the P/S is low because investors think the company won't do enough to avoid underperforming the broader industry in the near future. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as ONICO's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 30% decrease to the company's top line. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 44% in total over the last three years. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to decline by 1.1% over the next year, or less than the company's recent medium-term annualised revenue decline.
In light of this, it's understandable that ONICO's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, with revenue going quickly in reverse, it's not guaranteed that the P/S has found a floor yet. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth, which would be difficult to do with the current industry outlook.
The Bottom Line On ONICO's P/S
ONICO's P/S has taken a dip along with its share price. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
As expected, our analysis of ONICO confirms that the company's severe contraction in revenue over the past three-year years is a major contributor to its lower than industry P/S, given the industry is set to decline less. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. However, we're still cautious about the company's ability to prevent an acceleration of its recent medium-term course and resist even greater pain to its business from the broader industry turmoil. For now though, it's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
