Some Atlantis SE (WSE:ATS) Shareholders Look For Exit As Shares Take 26% Pounding
Unfortunately for some shareholders, the Atlantis SE (WSE:ATS) share price has dived 26% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. To make matters worse, the recent drop has wiped out a year's worth of gains with the share price now back where it started a year ago.
Even after such a large drop in price, given close to half the companies in Poland have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 12x, you may still consider Atlantis as a stock to avoid entirely with its 20.1x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.
Earnings have risen firmly for Atlantis recently, which is pleasing to see. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think this respectable earnings growth will be enough to outperform the broader market in the near future. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Atlantis would need to produce outstanding growth well in excess of the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 12% gain to the company's bottom line. Although, the latest three year period in total hasn't been as good as it didn't manage to provide any growth at all. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
Comparing that to the market, which is predicted to deliver 6.4% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is weaker based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.
With this information, we find it concerning that Atlantis is trading at a P/E higher than the market. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent earnings trends is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.
What We Can Learn From Atlantis' P/E?
Even after such a strong price drop, Atlantis' P/E still exceeds the rest of the market significantly. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
Our examination of Atlantis revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look worse than current market expectations. Right now we are increasingly uncomfortable with the high P/E as this earnings performance isn't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it will place shareholders' investments at significant risk and potential investors in danger of paying an excessive premium.
