Investors Met With Slowing Returns on Capital At Zabka Group (WSE:ZAB)
What are the early trends we should look for to identify a stock that could multiply in value over the long term? Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. That's why when we briefly looked at Zabka Group's (WSE:ZAB) ROCE trend, we were pretty happy with what we saw.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for Zabka Group, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.17 = zł1.7b ÷ (zł19b - zł8.3b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2025).
So, Zabka Group has an ROCE of 17%. That's a relatively normal return on capital, and it's around the 20% generated by the Consumer Retailing industry.

So How Is Zabka Group's ROCE Trending?
While the current returns on capital are decent, they haven't changed much. The company has employed 50% more capital in the last three years, and the returns on that capital have remained stable at 17%. 17% is a pretty standard return, and it provides some comfort knowing that Zabka Group has consistently earned this amount. Stable returns in this ballpark can be unexciting, but if they can be maintained over the long run, they often provide nice rewards to shareholders.
On a side note, Zabka Group's current liabilities are still rather high at 44% of total assets. This can bring about some risks because the company is basically operating with a rather large reliance on its suppliers or other sorts of short-term creditors. Ideally we'd like to see this reduce as that would mean fewer obligations bearing risks.
The Bottom Line On Zabka Group's ROCE
In the end, Zabka Group has proven its ability to adequately reinvest capital at good rates of return. However, over the last year, the stock has only delivered a 1.5% return to shareholders who held over that period. That's why it could be worth your time looking into this stock further to discover if it has more traits of a multi-bagger.
