Investors Appear Satisfied With Ekobox S.A.'s (WSE:EBX) Prospects As Shares Rocket 27%
Despite an already strong run, Ekobox S.A. (WSE:EBX) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 27% in the last thirty days. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 81% in the last year.
After such a large jump in price, given around half the companies in Poland have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 12x, you may consider Ekobox as a stock to potentially avoid with its 16.6x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
For example, consider that Ekobox's financial performance has been poor lately as its earnings have been in decline. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think the company will still do enough to outperform the broader market in the near future. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

How Is Ekobox's Growth Trending?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as high as Ekobox's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 8.9%. Even so, admirably EPS has lifted 683% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing earnings over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 14% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
In light of this, it's understandable that Ekobox's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Presumably shareholders aren't keen to offload something they believe will continue to outmanoeuvre the bourse.
The Bottom Line On Ekobox's P/E
Ekobox's P/E is getting right up there since its shares have risen strongly. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
As we suspected, our examination of Ekobox revealed its three-year earnings trends are contributing to its high P/E, given they look better than current market expectations. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Ekobox (of which 1 is a bit unpleasant!) you should know about.
