Serko Limited (NZSE:SKO) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 27% after a shaky period beforehand. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 12% in the last twelve months.

Since its price has surged higher, Serko may be sending sell signals at present with a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 6.1x, when you consider almost half of the companies in the Software industry in New Zealand have P/S ratios under 4.7x and even P/S lower than 1.5x aren't out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/S.

What Does Serko's Recent Performance Look Like?

Recent times have been advantageous for Serko as its revenues have been rising faster than most other companies. It seems the market expects this form will continue into the future, hence the elevated P/S ratio. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Is There Enough Revenue Growth Forecasted For Serko?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as high as Serko's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 17% gain to the company's top line. The latest three year period has also seen an incredible overall rise in revenue, aided by its incredible short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have been over the moon with those medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 40% as estimated by the seven analysts watching the company. With the industry only predicted to deliver 22%, the company is positioned for a stronger revenue result.

With this information, we can see why Serko is trading at such a high P/S compared to the industry. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

What We Can Learn From Serko's P/S?

Serko shares have taken a big step in a northerly direction, but its P/S is elevated as a result. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

We've established that Serko maintains its high P/S on the strength of its forecasted revenue growth being higher than the the rest of the Software industry, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in revenues is quite remote, justifying the elevated P/S ratio. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
