I Ran A Stock Scan For Earnings Growth And Pushpay Holdings (NZSE:PPH) Passed With Ease
For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.
In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like Pushpay Holdings (NZSE:PPH). While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

How Quickly Is Pushpay Holdings Increasing Earnings Per Share?
As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. I, for one, am blown away by the fact that Pushpay Holdings has grown EPS by 49% per year, over the last three years. Growth that fast may well be fleeting, but like a lotus blooming from a murky pond, it sparks joy for the wary stock pickers.
One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. Pushpay Holdings shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 22% to 29%, and revenue is growing. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

While we live in the present moment at all times, there's no doubt in my mind that the future matters more than the past. So why not check this interactive chart depicting future EPS estimates, for Pushpay Holdings?
Are Pushpay Holdings Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
It makes me feel more secure owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, thusly more closely aligning our interests. As a result, I'm encouraged by the fact that insiders own Pushpay Holdings shares worth a considerable sum. To be specific, they have US$54m worth of shares. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. Despite being just 4.8% of the company, the value of that investment is enough to show insiders have plenty riding on the venture.
Does Pushpay Holdings Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
Pushpay Holdings's earnings per share have taken off like a rocket aimed right at the moon. That EPS growth certainly has my attention, and the large insider ownership only serves to further stoke my interest. At times fast EPS growth is a sign the business has reached an inflection point; and I do like those. So yes, on this short analysis I do think it's worth considering Pushpay Holdings for a spot on your watchlist. You still need to take note of risks, for example - Pushpay Holdings has 3 warning signs we think you should be aware of.
Although Pushpay Holdings certainly looks good to me, I would like it more if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see insider buying, too, then this free list of growing companies that insiders are buying, could be exactly what you're looking for.
