Did you know there are some financial metrics that can provide clues of a potential multi-bagger? Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. So, when we ran our eye over Delegat Group's (NZSE:DGL) trend of ROCE, we liked what we saw.

Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)

Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. To calculate this metric for Delegat Group, this is the formula:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.12 = NZ$96m ÷ (NZ$819m - NZ$47m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2020).

Thus, Delegat Group has an ROCE of 12%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the Beverage industry average of 7.4% it's much better.

What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us

While the returns on capital are good, they haven't moved much. Over the past five years, ROCE has remained relatively flat at around 12% and the business has deployed 49% more capital into its operations. 12% is a pretty standard return, and it provides some comfort knowing that Delegat Group has consistently earned this amount. Stable returns in this ballpark can be unexciting, but if they can be maintained over the long run, they often provide nice rewards to shareholders.

The Bottom Line On Delegat Group's ROCE

In the end, Delegat Group has proven its ability to adequately reinvest capital at good rates of return. And long term investors would be thrilled with the 178% return they've received over the last five years. So while the positive underlying trends may be accounted for by investors, we still think this stock is worth looking into further.
