Recent 19% pullback isn't enough to hurt long-term poLight (OB:PLT) shareholders, they're still up 73% over 1 year

poLight ASA (OB:PLT) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 19% in the last week. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last year have been pleasing. Looking at the full year, the company has easily bested an index fund by gaining 73%.

While this past week has detracted from the company's one-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.

poLight isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually desire strong revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.

In the last year poLight saw its revenue shrink by 3.6%. The stock is up 73% in that time, a fine performance given the revenue drop. To us that means that there isn't a lot of correlation between the past revenue performance and the share price, but a closer look at analyst forecasts and the bottom line may well explain a lot.

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that poLight shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 73% over one year. Notably the five-year annualised TSR loss of 5% per year compares very unfavourably with the recent share price performance. This makes us a little wary, but the business might have turned around its fortunes. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 4 warning signs with poLight (at least 2 which are significant) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
