Earnings Working Against Komplett ASA's (OB:KOMPL) Share Price Following 25% Dive
To the annoyance of some shareholders, Komplett ASA (OB:KOMPL) shares are down a considerable 25% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. To make matters worse, the recent drop has wiped out a year's worth of gains with the share price now back where it started a year ago.
Since its price has dipped substantially, Komplett may be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 10.8x, since almost half of all companies in Norway have P/E ratios greater than 14x and even P/E's higher than 26x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
Komplett hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining earnings compare poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth on average. The P/E is probably low because investors think this poor earnings performance isn't going to get any better. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the market for P/E ratios like Komplett's to be considered reasonable.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 73%. Unfortunately, that's brought it right back to where it started three years ago with EPS growth being virtually non-existent overall during that time. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the two analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 5.2% over the next year. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 34% growth forecast for the broader market.
In light of this, it's understandable that Komplett's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
The Key Takeaway
Komplett's P/E has taken a tumble along with its share price. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
We've established that Komplett maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
