BEWi ASA's (OB:BEWI) Share Price Boosted 26% But Its Business Prospects Need A Lift Too
BEWi ASA (OB:BEWI) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 26% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 42% over that time.
Even after such a large jump in price, BEWi may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.4x, since almost half of all companies in the Chemicals industry in Norway have P/S ratios greater than 8.8x and even P/S higher than 80x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

How BEWi Has Been Performing
With its revenue growth in positive territory compared to the declining revenue of most other companies, BEWi has been doing quite well of late. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to follow the rest of the industry downwards, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

BEWi's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 15% last year. This was backed up an excellent period prior to see revenue up by 159% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenues over that time.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 2.6% as estimated by the three analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 31%, which is noticeably more attractive.
With this information, we can see why BEWi is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
What We Can Learn From BEWi's P/S?
Even after such a strong price move, BEWi's P/S still trails the rest of the industry. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
We've established that BEWi maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
