Here's Why We Think Multiconsult (OB:MULTI) Is Well Worth Watching

Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.

If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Multiconsult (OB:MULTI). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Quickly Is Multiconsult Increasing Earnings Per Share?

If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS). It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. Who among us would not applaud Multiconsult's stratospheric annual EPS growth of 46%, compound, over the last three years? That sort of growth never lasts long, but like a shooting star it is well worth watching when it happens.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. Multiconsult shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 3.1% to 11%, and revenue is growing. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

Are Multiconsult Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Like that fresh smell in the air when the rains are coming, insider buying fills me with optimistic anticipation. This view is based on the possibility that stock purchases signal bullishness on behalf of the buyer. However, small purchases are not always indicative of conviction, and insiders don't always get it right.

In the last year insider at Multiconsult were both selling and buying shares; but happily, as a group they spent kr1.1m more on stock, than they netted from selling it. Although I don't particularly like to see selling, the fact that they put more capital in, than they extracted, is a positive in my mind. We also note that it was the Independent Director, Rikard Appelgren, who made the biggest single acquisition, paying kr410k for shares at about kr41.00 each.

I do like that insiders have been buying shares in Multiconsult, but there is more evidence of shareholder friendly management. Specifically, the CEO is paid quite reasonably for a company of this size. For companies with market capitalizations between kr1.7b and kr6.7b, like Multiconsult, the median CEO pay is around kr4.9m.

Multiconsult offered total compensation worth kr3.4m to its CEO in the year to . That comes in below the average for similar sized companies, and seems pretty reasonable to me. While the level of CEO compensation isn't a huge factor in my view of the company, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. I'd also argue reasonable pay levels attest to good decision making more generally.

Does Multiconsult Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

Multiconsult's earnings per share growth have been levitating higher, like a mountain goat scaling the Alps. The company can also boast of insider buying, and reasonable remuneration for the CEO. It could be that Multiconsult is at an inflection point, given the EPS growth. If so, then it the potential for further gains probably merit a spot on your watchlist. We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 1 warning sign for Multiconsult that you need to be mindful of.

As a growth investor I do like to see insider buying. But Multiconsult isn't the only one. You can see a a free list of them here.
