Koninklijke KPN (AMS:KPN) Will Pay A Larger Dividend Than Last Year At €0.102
Koninklijke KPN N.V. (AMS:KPN) has announced that it will be increasing its periodic dividend on the 28th of April to €0.102, which will be 4.1% higher than last year's comparable payment amount of €0.098. This makes the dividend yield about the same as the industry average at 4.4%.
Koninklijke KPN's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings
We like a dividend to be consistent over the long term, so checking whether it is sustainable is important. Before this announcement, Koninklijke KPN was paying out 83% of earnings, but a comparatively small 70% of free cash flows. Since the dividend is just paying out cash to shareholders, we care more about the cash payout ratio from which we can see plenty is being left over for reinvestment in the business.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 34.9%. Assuming the dividend continues along the course it has been charting recently, our estimates show the payout ratio being 67% which brings it into quite a comfortable range.

Dividend Volatility
The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. Since 2015, the dividend has gone from €0.04 total annually to €0.17. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 16% a year over that time. Despite the rapid growth in the dividend over the past number of years, we have seen the payments go down the past as well, so that makes us cautious.
We Could See Koninklijke KPN's Dividend Growing
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. Koninklijke KPN has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 7.0% per annum. Recently, the company has been able to grow earnings at a decent rate, but with the payout ratio on the higher end we don't think the dividend has many prospects for growth.
In Summary
Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think Koninklijke KPN will make a great income stock. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
