The board of Nedap N.V. (AMS:NEDAP) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend on the 25th of April to €3.00. This will take the dividend yield from 4.7% to 4.7%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.

Nedap Doesn't Earn Enough To Cover Its Payments

Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. Based on the last payment, the company wasn't making enough to cover what it was paying to shareholders. It will be difficult to sustain this level of payout so we wouldn't be confident about this continuing.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 12.4%. However, if the dividend continues growing along recent trends, it could start putting pressure on the balance sheet with the payout ratio reaching 107% over the next year.

Dividend Volatility

The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least 1 cut in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from €0.98 in 2012 to the most recent annual payment of €3.00. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 12% over that duration. Dividends have grown rapidly over this time, but with cuts in the past we are not certain that this stock will be a reliable source of income in the future.

Nedap Might Find It Hard To Grow Its Dividend

Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. We are encouraged to see that Nedap has grown earnings per share at 16% per year over the past five years. While EPS is growing at a decent rate, but future growth could be limited by the amount of earnings being paid out to shareholders.

Nedap's Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable

In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think Nedap's payments are rock solid. In general, the distributions are a little bit higher than we would like, but we can't ignore the fact the quickly growing earnings gives this stock great potential in the future. We don't think Nedap is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
