We Like These Underlying Return On Capital Trends At ASM International (AMS:ASM)
Did you know there are some financial metrics that can provide clues of a potential multi-bagger? Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. So on that note, ASM International (AMS:ASM) looks quite promising in regards to its trends of return on capital.
What is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for ASM International, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.18 = €371m ÷ (€2.4b - €345m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2021).
Thus, ASM International has an ROCE of 18%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the Semiconductor industry average of 6.2% it's much better.

So How Is ASM International's ROCE Trending?
ASM International is showing promise given that its ROCE is trending up and to the right. The figures show that over the last five years, ROCE has grown 287% whilst employing roughly the same amount of capital. Basically the business is generating higher returns from the same amount of capital and that is proof that there are improvements in the company's efficiencies. It's worth looking deeper into this though because while it's great that the business is more efficient, it might also mean that going forward the areas to invest internally for the organic growth are lacking.
The Key Takeaway
In summary, we're delighted to see that ASM International has been able to increase efficiencies and earn higher rates of return on the same amount of capital. Since the stock has returned a staggering 836% to shareholders over the last five years, it looks like investors are recognizing these changes. Therefore, we think it would be worth your time to check if these trends are going to continue.
