Some Investors May Be Worried About B&S Group's (AMS:BSGR) Returns On Capital
Did you know there are some financial metrics that can provide clues of a potential multi-bagger? In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. Although, when we looked at B&S Group (AMS:BSGR), it didn't seem to tick all of these boxes.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What is it?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on B&S Group is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.16 = €69m ÷ (€833m - €406m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2021).
Therefore, B&S Group has an ROCE of 16%. By itself that's a normal return on capital and it's in line with the industry's average returns of 16%.

In the above chart we have measured B&S Group's prior ROCE against its prior performance, but the future is arguably more important. If you'd like, you can check out the forecasts from the analysts covering B&S Group here for free.
What Does the ROCE Trend For B&S Group Tell Us?
When we looked at the ROCE trend at B&S Group, we didn't gain much confidence. Around five years ago the returns on capital were 35%, but since then they've fallen to 16%. Meanwhile, the business is utilizing more capital but this hasn't moved the needle much in terms of sales in the past 12 months, so this could reflect longer term investments. It's worth keeping an eye on the company's earnings from here on to see if these investments do end up contributing to the bottom line.
On a separate but related note, it's important to know that B&S Group has a current liabilities to total assets ratio of 49%, which we'd consider pretty high. This effectively means that suppliers (or short-term creditors) are funding a large portion of the business, so just be aware that this can introduce some elements of risk. While it's not necessarily a bad thing, it can be beneficial if this ratio is lower.
Our Take On B&S Group's ROCE
Bringing it all together, while we're somewhat encouraged by B&S Group's reinvestment in its own business, we're aware that returns are shrinking. And in the last three years, the stock has given away 45% so the market doesn't look too hopeful on these trends strengthening any time soon. All in all, the inherent trends aren't typical of multi-baggers, so if that's what you're after, we think you might have more luck elsewhere.
