Insufficient Growth At Havas N.V. (AMS:HAVAS) Hampers Share Price

When close to half the companies in the Netherlands have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 20x, you may consider Havas N.V. (AMS:HAVAS) as a highly attractive investment with its 9x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

With earnings growth that's inferior to most other companies of late, Havas has been relatively sluggish. It seems that many are expecting the uninspiring earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Growth For Havas?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the market for P/E ratios like Havas' to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 3.6% gain to the company's bottom line. Ultimately though, it couldn't turn around the poor performance of the prior period, with EPS shrinking 34% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 11% per year during the coming three years according to the seven analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 15% per year growth forecast for the broader market.

In light of this, it's understandable that Havas' P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

The Bottom Line On Havas' P/E

While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of Havas' analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook is contributing to its low P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
