Azerion Group N.V. (AMS:AZRN) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 38% after a shaky period beforehand. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 13% in the last twelve months.

Although its price has surged higher, Azerion Group's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.3x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the Interactive Media and Services industry in the Netherlands, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 1.6x and even P/S above 6x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

How Has Azerion Group Performed Recently?

With revenue growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Azerion Group has been doing relatively well. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is low because investors think this strong revenue performance might be less impressive moving forward. If the company manages to stay the course, then investors should be rewarded with a share price that matches its revenue figures.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Azerion Group's to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 13% gain to the company's revenues. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 134% overall rise in revenue, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 5.4% during the coming year according to the two analysts following the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 9.7% growth, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.

With this information, we can see why Azerion Group is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

What Does Azerion Group's P/S Mean For Investors?

Azerion Group's stock price has surged recently, but its but its P/S still remains modest. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We've established that Azerion Group maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
